The Millesimal fineness is a system of marking the purity of gold, platinum, and silver alloys by parts per thousand of pure metal by mass in the respective metal alloy. Fourteen-karat gold, for example, contains 58.5% pure gold and is therefore marked as “585” or “14K” gold. The decimal marking “585” is predominantly used in European countries, whereas the karat system in the United States denotes the purity of gold by fractions of 24. Therefore, 14K stands for 14 parts per 24 parts of pure gold by mass, which makes the pure gold content in a piece of 14K gold 58.3%.
The number “417” stamped on gold jewelry refers to its purity. Specifically, it indicates that the jewelry is 41.7% pure gold. Here’s a breakdown:
Gold purity is often represented in karats (in the U.S.) and fineness (elsewhere). A piece of gold that is 24 karats (or 24k) is pure gold. However, pure gold is very soft and is often alloyed with other metals to make it stronger and more suitable for everyday wear.
